A SUCCESSFUL GETAWAY
We were driven to the airport by Norma's daughter, Blue, where we quickly made our way to the lounge where we indulged in a glass of wine or two and some tortilla chips and hummus dip. The plane left on time and we were fed dinner and then breakfast. We each managed a few hours of sleep on the plane. After flying through customs in the fast lane (the advantage of business class), we exited to be met by our London Black Cab driver. We were at our hotel, The Landmark, and in our room by noon. The hotel was once a railroad hotel (like the Chateau). It takes up a whole city block and is built around a courtyard which our room faces. It is only five stories high.
We headed out on a walking tour planned by a friend who had just come back from London who had prepared us with a map and detailed instruction - Thanks, Joanne. We wended our way to Fortnum and Mason's where we picked up our picnic dinner. We had a choice of seven different types of smoked salmon - we picked the house specialty - where it was gently sliced and beautifully wrapped. It was worth the price just to watch the care given this delicacy. We explored the emporium further and picked up a delicious fresh olive/cheese baguette and some Greek Salad. We walked to Green Park and peeked into the back gardens of the rich and famous. Then we felt a raindrop, then two, then lightning and thunder. We were pretty tired by then so decided that we would turn around at this point. We had been warned that thunderstorms were predicted for the afternoon and for once the weatherman was right. We took shelter under a construction overhang and waited it out. It teemed rain for about half an hour flooding the streets. (We must have brought our weather with us. The only difference is that it is warm here.) When the rain lightened up, we proceeded to head back to the hotel - wet and tired after five hours on our feet. After a shower and change into our jammies we proceeded to eat our delicious dinner with a glass of wine. We chatted for a bit and hit the sack. After two hours of dead sleep, we are now up at 10:30 pm bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Rather than fighting insomnia, I decided to update the blog.
Tomorrow morning we meet Bill and Sandra for breakfast followed by a bus ride to Southhampton and our ship, Regent Explorer.
