PRIVATE YACHT DAY - PART TWO

Not much to report. After a light lunch prepared for the five of us that stayed aboard, we returned to our room - Norma rested while I napped. We took a stroll around the sun deck and watched while the people who had elected to go to Amsterdam straggled back on board. The one part of the day that I was sorry to have missed was the canal cruise. We learned that the cruise boat was unbearably hot. The canal boats are glass covered so that people have unobstructed views. Only half of the roof could be opened. The rest felt as though they were in a greenhouse. And lunch was served on the boat. It just reaffirmed the decision we had made.

At dinner we were seated with a couple from Seattle - Gary and Consuela. He was an actuary for Manulife and made sure we knew how high up in the company he was when he retired. Regarding dinner times, we find that most people head to the dining room at 6:30 after the cocktail hour which is 5:30 to 6:30 but we manage to hold out until 7:30.

We are cruising this morning and will reach Cologne by noon. We will have a tour of the Cathedral followed by a visit to the Romano-Germanic Museum. We plan to walk back to the boat - it's a 20-minute walk along the river. There is not a cloud in the sky this morning and the temperature is predicted to be 87 degrees F or 31 C. We have gone directly into summer.

OUR FIRST DAY ON THE RIVERBOAT, TREASURE After reviewing the program for today, we both came to the same conclusion. We are going to skip it. The day as planned was to meet at 8 am, depart for Amsterdam at 8:20, visit the Rijks Museum, have lunch on a canal cruise, return to the Rijks for a bathroom break, spend 2.5 hours on our own exploring areas we have already seen or shopping, then 2 hours on the bus to meet up with our boat at the next port. The day began at 8 and ended at 5:30. Just writing about it exhausts me. Last night we were seated with a couple who refer to us as the Champagne Girls - they saw us at breakfast yesterday. Keith and Sue are English and we enjoyed meeting them. They also like to eat late - everyone else goes in as soon as the dining room opens. PRIVATE YACHT DAY - PART ONE

PRIVATE YACHT DAY - PART ONE It's not often one can say it but "Boy, Did We Make the Right Decision!" There are only five people on board and we have the boat to ourselves. After breakfast we shopped to use up our shipboard credit - scarfs and jewelry. We have made a dent in our 300 Euros. This is apparently two cruises back to back and we can't spend the last 100 until after Budapest. After shopping in the tiny shop with no competition from other passengers, we changed into our bathing suits and enjoyed the hot tub. We were the only ones on the sun deck and in the pool. Despite being told, the boat was going to be travelling through a heavy industrialized part of the country, we left that part behind in Amsterdam and have been enjoying seeing the rural part of Holland. We are now entering the first of a series of locks so are preparing for our 'light' lunch in the dining room. Looking at concrete walls isn't so great. Looking forward to...

MELK, AUSTRIA AND CRUISING THROUGH THE WACHAU VALLE

MELK, AUSTRIA AND CRUISING THROUGH THE WACHAU VALLEY We docked early this morning in Melk and are to visit the "Magnificent Baroque Abbey of Melk". We have free time until we depart for a cruise through the Wachau Valley en route to Vienna. The Valley is considered to be one of the most picturesque areas along the Danube and is a prime wine growing area. At 5:00 pm we are scheduled to leave for Vienna by bus in all our finery for a "Sparkling" Event at the Palais Ferstel for dinner and a show of Viennese Musical Traditions. It is supposed to be the highlight of this trip but we are not too sure about it. The menu doesn't appeal and neither of us likes the feeling of being trapped for 5 hours if we are not enjoying ourselves. The Abbey Museum tour was a little boring - but we did learn that 30 monks reside there and that a school of 900 pupils occupies much of the building.
