REGENSBURG, BAVARIA
REGENSBURG, BAVARIA
Last night the boat fell behind schedule as we had to wait our turn to go into the three biggest locks of our journey - rises of 81 feet each. Cargo boats take precedence over tourist boats which makes sense as that is why the canals were originally constructed. Instead of before dinner, we passed through the first one after dinner and luckily we were just in time for the approach. Vincenzo, our Cruise Director was ensconced in a place of honour on the Wheelhouse Deck. As we sailed into the lock, there was a cascade of water dripping from the crossbars above us. He thought it quite amusing as we were drenched. As we dress up for dinner in our Simpli, we were less than pleased. I was soaked to the skin and retired to our room to wash my clothes and shower again. BOO! I am positive he knew that this would occur - it would have been nice to have had a warning or an umbrella. I am most definitely not impressed.
We finished watching Monuments Men and this morning regaled each other with the weird dreams we both had last night. The weather is much cooler and very cloudy, feels like rain although it's not supposed to. The prediction was for it to be much like yesterday's.
After lunch today we will do a walking tour of Regensburg through the Old Town viewing St Peter's Cathedral and the Town Hall. The Old Stone Bridge is the oldest bridge in Germany still standing and was built between 1135 and 1161. We then have a "Tauck Exclusive" private visit to the Enteram Palace, the 500-room regal abode of the noble Thurn und Taxis family.
Apparently, we arrive in time for the biennial Burgerfest which attracts some 200,000 visitors garbed in traditional dress.
We then have an option to check out Walhalla, the Bavarian Acropolis, which offers a spectacular view over the Danube Valley. We'll see. I am beginning to mistrust some of the descriptions offered by the Cruise Director.
After dinner, we are going to be treated to an 'a Capella' quartet formerly of the Boy's Choir of Regensburg. Then we head to Passau.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BURG AND BERG
Burg means a town with a castle.
Berg means a town settled in the hills.
