WURZBURG, GERMANY
Today, much of the timing will depend on our passage through the locks but the plan is to have breakfast - dining room is open til 9:00, brunch is at 11:00, arrival in Wurzburg is at 12:30. We chose the Wurzburg Residenz Palace Tour of the splendid baroque extravaganza. It will be followed by a walking tour of the Old Town. We plan to walk back to the ship and will decide after that whether or not to join a Hofkeller wine tasting in the "extremely atmospheric candlelit cellars" of the Residenz.
We have awakened this morning to another cloudless day without any breeze. Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s yet again. I think that will determine how much we will feel like doing.
The temperature reached 38 degrees C or 100 degrees F today but we managed to see the magnificent restored rooms of the baroque-style Wurzburg Palace. After the tour of the Palace, we decided to take a turn in the gardens rather than continue on the tour of the town. The town was completely destroyed in the bombings in WWII and all the buildings are either restored or rebuilt. The Palace was also bombed but the Monument Men saved the frescos by building a roof to cover the vaulted ceiling. The vaulted ceiling structure survived the bombing - a credit to the architect as the ceiling is the size of a football field. It was the roof over it that was completely destroyed. We are watching the movie about this as we have time - half an hour here, half an hour there. We walked back to the ship and rested up before heading out to the 16th century wine cellars. We had the same guide as for our Palace tour and he was excellent - good sense of humour. We sampled three different wines before heading back to the boat to dress for dinner. Tonight's entertainment is a disco party which we plan to skip.
